What is a diamond?
A diamond is a crystalline form of the element carbon, basis of life on our planet and the hardest mineral found in nature. Diamonds mined from the earth are elementally identical to those that are grown in a laboratory. Lab diamonds are man made, and recreate what is created by the earth and time.
Mined diamonds
Mined diamonds have a history of conflict and human rights violation (we have term 'blood diamond' for a reason). More than that, the environmental harm that mined diamonds cause is devastating and irreversible. Despite best intentions and practice, even mined diamonds that are described as ethical and "conflict-free" (like Canadian Diamonds) still have a significantly negative ecological and social impact.
Lab grown diamonds
Although they are largely marketed as the superior choice for sustainability, many lab diamond growing and cutting facilities create just as much environmental damage as that of a mine and can have a highly destructive carbon footprint through their energy consumption and pollution output. These lab growing and cutting facilities overwhelmingly have poor working conditions and engage in corrupt labour practices.
